Samaram also known as Vensamaram
Samaram also known as Vensamaram, which would be white in colour, is a hand-made fan which is used to honour the kings and the deities like Indra, Chandra and Varuna. It is used to stay away from the flies and other insects, and to create a good environment. It is made from the hair of some animals, and nowadays artificial hair is also used to produce Vensamaram, which is used in the temples for providing air to the deities, and, especially to the Utsava deities.
Some servants would be exclusively appointed by ancient kings, to undertake the task of doing Samaram activity, in order to create fresh air. During the times, when there was no electricity, Samaram acted as a fan to the people, and mostly Royal people like Kings, Queens, Princes, Princess and Ministers utilised these type of facilities, in order to stay away from the heat.
Demon kings like Hiranyakasipu, Ravana and Kansa have appointed several women maids to undertake the Samaram activity, and for that, they would be paid suitable remuneration. It is also very difficult to use Samaram for a long time, since it would create pain on the hands. But however, the servants used to obey the orders of their masters, and they would do the activity with an artificial smile on their face for several hours in a day. If a person becomes tired, and if he sleeps while performing the Samaram work, then he would be severely punished by the king, and sometimes, his head also would be chopped.
But the Divine avatars like Prahalada, Dhruva, Rama and Krishna would never torture their attendants while they were doing the Samaram activity. As per Ramayan, it was mentioned that the great Lakshmana had undertaken the Samaram activity, and he has done this, in order to express his love and affection towards his beloved brother Lord Rama.
But at the present period, since we are having the benefit of using electricity power, we are using fans, air coolers, and air conditioners instead of SAMARAM. Due to the grace of Lord Vayu Bhagavan, we are also enjoying the fresh air from various electronic devices, but, however, the air generated from the hand made Samaram is more worthy, than that of the air generate from the electronic devices, since old things are always to be considered as gold things.
