Janmashtami in Andhra Pradesh: Krishnashtami Celebrations

Janmashtami or Krishnashtami, also known as Gokulashtami, is the festival celebrates the birthday of Lord Krishna. Janmashtami is also called as Sri Krishna Jayanti. Krishna Janmashtami 2012 date is August 9 & 10. Janmashtami is the term given by Smartha sect of devotees to Krishna Jayanthi and Gokulashtami is the term represents the Krishna Jayanti as per Vaishnava sect of devotees.

In Andhra Pradesh, Smartha sect of people celebrates Krishna Janmashtami in 2012 on August 9. Gokulashtami date in 2012 is August 10. In Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, the rituals of Krishnashtami are same and followed similarly in both states.

In Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, Dahi Handi (Utti) or Gopalkala is the main ritual during Gokulashtami. In some places, idol of Krishna takes up to a procession and offered Aartis to the Lord. In ISKCON temples in Bangalore and Hyderabad, Janmashtami is the biggest festival to be celebrated. Hyderabad and Bangalore cities have huge population of North Indian especially Gujarati people. Janmashtami is celebrated with grand festivity in Hyderabad.
