Sri Krishna Janmashtami (Shri Krishna Jayanthi, Sree Krishnashtami, Gokulashtami), is the birthday of Lord Sri Krishna. In 2012, Krishna Janmashtami date is August 9 & 10. Lord Krishna is also one of the Dasavatara (ten supreme incarnations) of Lord Vishnu. Vaishnava and Madhva sect of Brahmins celebrate the festival as Gokulashtami on August 22nd. The festival is celebrated on Krishna Paksha Ashtami in Bhadrapad month in North India and Krishna Paksha Astami in Shravan month in Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, and Telugu calendars.
