Sri Krishna Janmashtami (Shri Krishna Jayanthi, Sree Krishnashtami, Gokulashtami), is the birthday of Lord Sri Krishna. In 2012, Krishna Janmashtami date is August 9 & 10. Lord Krishna is also one of the Dasavatara (ten supreme incarnations) of Lord Vishnu. Vaishnava and Madhva sect of Brahmins celebrate the festival as Gokulashtami on August 22nd. Krishna Jayanti 2011 date in North India is 22 August. The festival is celebrated on Krishna Paksha Ashtami in Bhadrapad month in North India and Krishna Paksha Astami in Shravan month in Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, and Telugu calendars.
Sri Krishna Jayanti is observed as Ashtami Rohini in Kerala. Ashtami Rohini 2012 date is September 8. Ashtami Rohini 2011 date was August 22 & 23.
Lord Sri Krishna is worshipped with utmost pomp in many places of India. Devotees install the clay idol of Sri Krishna and offer abhishek and special naivedya to the Lord. In the evening, cradle ceremony of Lord Sri Krishna is also performed.
The next day of Sri Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated as Nandotsav or Nanda Mahotsav in Sri Krishna temples in North India. Just after fifteen days of Janmashtami, Radhashtami or Radha Rani Jayanti is celebrated.
