Once upon a time, when the sages were performing a yagya at Prayag, Sage Suta visited that sacred place. All the sages were very glad to see him, and they requested him to tell about the significance of Shiva Maha Purana, since they consider that listening to Shiva Maha Purana would grant Salvation to them. And as per their request, Sage Suta began to tell about the greatness of Shiva Purana.

The Shiva Purana is one of the eighteen Puranas, and it is considered as an important Sanskrit text in Hinduism, which was written by the great sage Sri Veda Vyasa, with the help of his disciple Romaharshana, and it tells about the importance of Lord Shiva and about Mata Parvati.

By reading Shiva Purana, we would know about the greatness of Lord Shiva, his powers, defeating and destroying of demons by him, and about his miracles performed to his devotees.  The Shiva Purana invokes the “SHIVA BHAKTI” in the minds of the readers, and through that, they can develop strong faith on Lord Shiva.  According to Shiva Purana, Lord Shiva is considered as the creator, protector and the destroyer of the entire universe, and there is no beginning or end for him. In Shiva Purana, bhakti is considered as the main aspect to attain salvation. Anyone who has sincere bhakti on Lord Shiva would be able to attain his lotus feet. Ancient Nayanmar saints were lived as per the principles of Shaiva Siddhantha, they kept sincere faith on Lord Shiva, and they were ready even to sacrifice their lives for the sake of Lord Shiva.

The Shiva Purana focuses primarily on Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, but refers to and venerates all the gods in Hinduism. The Shiva Purana contains about 24,000 verses and this Purana tastes like the Divine nectar.

The Greatness of Shiva Purana

The Shiva Purana contains the details of Shiva, Hindu mythology, relationships, meditation, Yoga, Holy pilgrimage, devotion, Holy rivers and about the developing the habit of reading or listening to Shiva Purana.

This Purana was first told by Narada to Suta, and from Suta to the great Rishi Saunaka, and later it was again told to Rishi Vedavyasa by Rishi Narada, who has written this Purana in a fantastic manner.
