Vallamkali, the traditional South Indian boat racing has a special place in Canada. The trophy that is given to the winner of this boat race is Canadian Nehru Trophy. This boat is held at the Heart lake Conservation Park in Brampton. Every year many teams in Canada and Kerala register for the event. It is to be noted that many teams from USA also indulge in this boat race.
The Canadians along with the Malayalee community living in Canada and USA has made this particular event successful year after years. The boat race format is very thrilling, team’s displays energized performance and very strong contenders are the specialty of this event. It is really wonderful to witness boats headlong for the finish line.
The prominent participating boats in this event are ‘Jala Kesari Chundan’ from New York, ‘Kairali Chundan’ from Scarborough, ‘Kalladayar Chundan’ from Mississauga, ‘iMalayalee Chundan’, ‘Canadian Chundan’, ‘Palliyodam Padkuthira’, Edathuva Chundan, Niagara Tharangam, Kina Chundan, ACN Canada, Able & team – St Peters Church, Mississauga and New York Boat Club.
The President of Brampton Malayalee Samajam presents the winner the Canadian Nehru Trophy. Every year, a Canadian VIP is called on for the inaugural function of this event. Hundreds of Canadian along with Malayalees based at Canada and USA participate in this event. The local administration and the police department support this event. The organizers also get good support from other community associations also. The neighboring state Malayalee associations of Brampton play a major role in this boat race.
