Spiritual Significance
The month of Aadi marks the beginning of Dakshinayanampunyakalam (the sun’s transit southward). It is considered a period spiritually charged with feminine energy (Shakti).
-
Worship of Amman: On Aadi Chevvai, devotees pray to village deities and major manifestations of the Goddess, such as Mariamman, Mundakakanni Amman, and Kali Amman. It is believed that the Goddess is exceptionally powerful during this month and visits Earth to bless her devotees with health, prosperity, and protection from diseases.
-
Mitigating Mars Dosha: Because Tuesday is ruled by Chevvai (Mars), praying on this day is believed to neutralize the malefic effects of Mars (Chevvai Dosham), removing obstacles in marriage, property disputes, and health issues.
Traditional Rituals & Offerings
Temples across Tamil Nadu hold grand celebrations on every Tuesday of this month. Major rituals include:
-
Avvaiyar Nonbu: A unique ritual performed exclusively by women and young girls on one of the Aadi Tuesdays. They prepare a special, saltless kolukattai (steamed rice dumplings) late at night and pray to the ancient saint-poetess Avvaiyar for the longevity of their family members and to find good life partners. Men are traditionally not allowed to witness this ritual.
-
Oorvalam and Kool Varthal: Huge pots of Aadi Kool (a nutritious, fermented ragi/millet porridge) are prepared, offered to the Goddess, and distributed as prasadam to the community.
-
Maa Vilakku: Devotees make a unique lamp using rice flour, jaggery, and ghee, light it inside the temple or at home, and offer it to the Goddess.
Aadi Chevvai vs. Aadi Velli
While Aadi Chevvai (Tuesday) focuses intensely on seeking protection, overcoming enemies, removing obstacles, and health, Aadi Velli (Friday) is dedicated to attracting wealth, prosperity, and auspiciousness through Goddess Mahalakshmi and Kamakshi. Both days are celebrated with equal fervor throughout the month.
