Sacred thread is not meant to be worn only by the Brahmins. People who belong to Vysya and Vishwakarma group are also used to wear the sacred thread. Since the sacred thread closely relates with the Vedas, and since all the deities contain to be the form of Vedas, most of the deities in our Holy Hinduism can be seen portraying with sacred thread on their body.In pictures of the deities, we can see the smiling little god Muruga who would be portrayed with a sacred thread on his body. Even the Vanaras like Vaali, Sugriva and Hanuman used to wear the sacred thread on their body.
During the Vamana Avatar of Lord Vishnu, the little boy Vamana had worn the sacred thread at the age of five, and likewise, most of the avatars of Lord Vishnu used to wear the sacred thread, since they are considered as the protectors and preservers of Vedas. Even demons like Ravana, Vibhishana, Prahalada and Mahabali used to wear the sacred thread, since they were considered to be the great grand-children of Lord Brahma Deva. In the holy text, Sri Prahalada Mahatmyam, it was mentioned that the great Vishnu Bhagavata, Sri Bhakta Prahalada used to daily perform Sandhyavandanam for three times a day. Likewise ancient kings like Vikramaditya and Bhojaraja used to wear the sacred thread, though they were belonged to the Kshatriya caste.
In most of the pictures of Lord Rama and Krishna, we can see them wearing the holy sacred thread on their body. Ancient sages like Vasishta, Bhrigu, Atri, Pulastya and Marichi used to wear the sacred thread, since they were considered to be the aspects of Lord Brahma Deva. Some female chaste Rishika women like Godha, Apala, Aditi and Ma Bharatwaji also used to wear the sacred thread, since they used to recite the Vedic mantras on a regular basis, and they also taught Vedas to some learned scholars.
But at the present scenario, most of the Brahmins are considering the sacred thread only as an ordinary thread, and most of them are also not doing the famous ritual Sandhyavandanam. Most of them are citing various reasons for not performing Sandhyavandanam, and they also consider the holy ritual as an unimportant one!
Some non-believers of god are also cutting the sacred threads of the Brahmins by considering them as “HARMLESS CREATURES”.Some time back, one person who belonged to a political party has cut the sacred thread of a person with the belief that the person belongs to Brahmin community. Immediately he received a big blow on his head through a hammer, and it was done by the person who has lost his sacred thread, and the person was the one, who belonged to “SRI VISWAKARMA COMMUNITY”.
