Mahanambrata Brahmachari (1904-1999) was a Hindu saint who was the founder of the Mahanam Sampraday, and he lived in the present-day Bangladesh. He was a great scholar and expert in religious texts of Hinduism. His birth name was Bankim Dasgupta.
He was born in a pious Brahmin family and he completed his primary studies nearby his home.At his young age, his father has become blind, and hence, the young Mahanambrata sincerely served his father, and during his leisure time, he read the holy texts of Hinduism. He met Sri Prabhu Jagadbandhu and paid his great respects to him.
After the death of his father, he went to the Faridpur Ashram, and he became a part of the Mahanam Sampradaya, where the teachings of Prabhu Jagadbandhu would be spread amongst the public, then after some time, as per the instructions of his spiritual Guru Sri. Sripad Mahendra ji, he went back to his home, and completed his 10th standard exams, and after that, again he went to Sri Angan Ashram, Faridpur and tooksanyasa by Sripad Mahendraji and he became known as Mahanambrata. He also completed his college education as per the advice of his guru.
He also protected the rights of the Hindus by staying in Pakistan and Bangladesh, and collected funds from the Hindus for reconstruction and renovation of ancient Hindu Temples. He also built small Hindu temples in places like Dhaka, Faridpur and Chattagram. He set up a committee and took care of the minority Hindus in Pakistan.
He is still having lot of followers in India, Bangladesh and in Pakistan, and his disciples worship him till to date, by considering him as the holy incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Dr. Mahanambrata Brahmachariji’s idol is worshipped by his devotees at MahanamAngan, Kolkata during the auspicious festival of Guru Purnima. His teachings and principles are still adopted by his followers, and he is a renowned saint during the 20th century AD.
