Govind Dev Ji Temple, Jaipur

Temple of Lord Shri Govind Dev Ji is a very famous Hindu temple situated in City Palace Complex of Jaipur of Rajasthan. As Lord Krishna is known by many names through his devotees, Govind is also one of the famous names of Lord Krishna so the temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna.

The king Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of the Jaipur City, brought the idol of Lord Shri Govind Dev Ji from the Vrindavan here. The image of the Shri Krishna, according to the popular legend, seems be exactly like form of Krishna at the time of his incarnation on the earth.

Here, the image of Lord Govind Ji was also known as ‘Bajarakriti’ as the image was formed Bajranabh, the great grandson of Lord Krishna according to the legend; it is also mentioned when Bajranabh was 13 years of age, near about 5000 years back, his grandmother (daughter-in-law) had described the form of Lord Krishna on request of his grandson and following the description; he made first image and shown it her grandmother. She said that the only feet were like that of Lord Krishna. He drew second image and in the image, only chest was alike Lord Krishna; finally seeing the third image, she nodded with the blush.

The first image was known as ‘Madan Mohan Ji’, second one was called ‘Gopi Nath Ji’ and the third one was ‘Lord Shri Dev Ji.

The temple of Shri Govind Dev is one of the most important temples out of Vrindavan for Vaishnavities, devotees of Lord Krishna. Here in the temple, Janmasthni – birth anniversary of Lord Krishna – is celebrated in fullest scale.
