Sri Vilvaranyeswarar temple is located in the village named Koovilambur, near Tirukollampudur, in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. The main deities of this temple are Vilwaranyeswarar, also praised asVilwanathar, Tirukollam Poodhur Udayar (Lord Shiva) and his consorts are Soundara Nayaki – Azhagia Nachiar. The holy tree of this temple is Vilwa.
The holy waters of this temple are Agni and Ganga Theerthams. The agamam or pooja of this temple is known as Kameekam. This temple is nearly 1000-2000 years old in this region. The historical name of this place is none.
According to the Hindu religious scholars and pundits, “The temple is praised in the Thevaram hymns of Saint Tirugnana Sambandar.This is the 113th Shiva temple on the southern bank of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns.”
The important festivals of this shrine are Thai Poosam in January-February, Margazhi Danur Puja in December-January, Mother Soundara Nayaki procession during Navarathri in September-October; Panchamurthy procession and Chithirai Brahmmotsavam on Chitra Poornima-full moon day in April-May; Saint Tirugnanasambandar festival on the new moon day, Lord’s procession on Karthikai pradosham day and special pujas on Mondays of the month in November-December and Skanda Sashti in Aipasi-October-November are the festivals celebrated in the shrine.
It is to be highly noted that Lord Shiva blesses devotees and pilgrims as a swayambu murthy in the temple. The temple is open from 7.00 a.m. and 11.30 a.m. and from 6.00 p.m. and 8.30 p.m for devotees and pilgrims. Other shrines in this temple are Panchalingas, Mother Gajalakshmi, Lords Poyyadha Vinayaka, Muruga, Adhi Viswanatha, Valampuri Vinayaka and Gajamuktheeswarar.
