Smarta Ekadashi – 15 November 2025
Bhagvat, Vaishnava Ekadashi – 15 November 2025, Vaishnav Ekadashi.
This Ekadashi commemorates the demolition of demon Murasura by Lord Vishnu and it is associated with the birth of Ekadasi Mata. When Lord Vishnu was sleeping, demon Mura planned to kill him. Goddess Ekadasi was born by the divine creation and slain the demon.
To honour the courage and devotion towards him, Lord Vishnu thanked Goddess Ekadashi for killing the demon. He also blessed her that whoever observes fast on Ekadasi will get salvation. Lord Krishna advised to his devotees that to start their Ekadasi upvas on Utpanna Ekadashi or Utpatti Ekadasi. They break Ekadasi upavas on Dwadashi day.
It is to note that as per Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat calendars, Utpanna Ekadasi falls on Krishna Ekadashi day in Karthik Month.
Importance and Legend
Utpanna Ekadashi commemorates the birth of Goddess Ekadashi, who emerged as a protective power of Lord Vishnu to vanquish the demon Mur while Lord Vishnu was resting. Devotees believe that by observing the fast, their sins are destroyed, and blessings of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Ekadashi are received. It is said that the spiritual merit from fasting on Utpanna Ekadashi is greater than that obtained from grand sacrifices like Ashwamedha or Vajpeya Yajnas.
