Sri Thanthondri Easwarar temple is positioned in the famous village named Belur, in the district of Salem, in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. The main deity of this temple is Thaan Thondri Easwarar (Lord Shiva) and his consort is Ammai. The festival deity is Aram Valartha .
The holy trees of this temple are Mango, Jack and Iluppai All in one tree. The holy water of this temple is River Vasishta. The agamam or pooja of this temple is called as Kameeyam. This temple is just 1000-2000 years old in this region. The historical name of this village is Velviyur.
The most important festivals that are grandly celebrated in this particular temple are Aadi 18 in July-August, Purattasi Navarathri in September-October, Karthikai in November-December, Deepavalli, pradosha days, New Year days according to Tamil calendar and English calendar, Amavasya, Vaikunta Ekadashi, Pournima, monthly new moon days and Masi Maha Shivrathri in February-March are celebrated in this temple.
The temple is open from 6.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. It is one of the ancient temples in this district that is largely dedicated to Lord Shiva and thronged by devotees and pilgrims in large number on all auspicious and religious important days with much festivity. Under the Vanni tree in the temple is present the Planet Shani Bhagwan. A beautiful sculpture of a Yazhi that resembles like a lion has a rolling stone ball in its throat is present in this temple complex.
