Sri Shamba Murtheeswarar temple is located in the village named Ethapur, in the district of Salem, in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. The main deity of this temple is Shamba Murtheeswarar (Lord Shiva) and his consort is Manonmani. The festival deity is Uma Maheswarar. The holy tree of this temple is Vilwa. The holy waters of this temple are Vasishta River. The agamam or pooja of this temple is known as Kameekam. This temple is nearly 500-1000 years old in this region. The historical name of this place is Vasishtaranyam.
The important festivals of this shrine are Thai Brahmmotsavam in January-February, Shivarathri in Febraury – March, Poornima pujas each month, Skanda Sashti in Aipasi-October-November, Thai Poosam in January-February, Margazhi Danur Puja in December-January, Lord’s procession on Karthikai pradosham day, special pujas on Mondays of the month in November-December, 12 day Chithirai Brahmmotsavam in April-May, Navarathri in September-October, Pongal, English and Tamil New Year days and Deepavalli are the festivals celebrated in this temple.
Devotees and pilgrims from far and near often visit this temple in the region. According to the local legends and scholars, “Lord is a Swaymbu Linga. During the first week of Masi month – February-March, Sun God worships Lord spreading his rays on Lord.” It is to be noted that for all the people, the temple is open from 9.30 a.m. and 12.00 a.m. and from 5.00 p.m. and 8.00 p.m. The temple reflects the perfect blend of Dravidian temple architectural style in each and every corner.
