5 January 2019 is Shani Amavasya (Sanischari Amavasai). This Shani Amavasya is Margashirsha Amavasya as per the Amavasyant Panchangam followed in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat. It is Poush Amavasya as per North Indian Hindi calendars (Purnimant Panchangam).
Amavasya begins at 4.57 AM on 5th January and ends at 6.58 AM on 6th January. It falls in Margazhi Masam in Tamil calendar, Dhanu Masam in Malayalam calendar and Poush Month in Bengali Panjika.
This Amavasya marks the end of Margashirsha Month for Amavasyant calendars. It also marks the end of Krishna Paksha of Poush Month for Purnimant calendars of North India.
