Sarvatobhadra Chakra
In Jyotisha, the Sarvatobhadra Chakra (SBC) is one of the most advanced and comprehensive predictive tools used for evaluating planetary transits (Gochar). Its name translates directly to “auspicious from all sides” (Sarva = all/everywhere, Bhadra = auspicious). Classical texts sometimes refer to it as Trilokya Deepa—a lamp that illuminates the three worlds—due to its sweeping analytical power.
Unlike standard divisional charts (like the Navamsa or Drekkana) that analyze static natal placements, the SBC is a dynamic transit map. It integrates multiple variables of time, space, and sound into a single framework.
The 81-Square Architecture
The Chakra is constructed as a 9×9 square grid containing 81 specific cells. Unlike standard astrology that uses 27 Nakshatras, the SBC strictly utilizes 28 Nakshatras, reintroducing the intercalary Abhijit nakshatra.
The grid is populated in concentric rings moving inward:

The Outer Ring (28 Nakshatras): The middle seven squares of each of the four outer edges house the Nakshatras, beginning with Krittika in the East and moving clockwise.

The Diagonals (16 Vowels): The corners and the diagonal squares leading to the center hold the 16 Sanskrit vowels (Swaras).

The Inner Rings (Consonants & Rashis): The remaining squares just inside the border house 20 specific Sanskrit consonants (Vyanjanas) and the 12 Zodiac signs (Rashis).

The Core Mechanism: Vedha (Obstruction)
The fundamental operating principle of the Sarvatobhadra Chakra is Vedha, which translates to piercing, obstruction, or influence.
When a transiting planet occupies a Nakshatra on the outer rim of the chakra, it casts Vedha along three specific linear paths across the grid:

Astrologers trace these Vedha lines to see which squares the transiting planet “pierces.” If a malefic planet (like Saturn or Rahu) casts a Vedha on the square containing your birth Nakshatra (Janma Nakshatra), your birth Tithi, or the first consonant of your name (Nama Akshara), it signifies a period of friction, delay, or physical vulnerability. Conversely, benefic planets casting Vedha on these points bring sudden opportunities, wealth, and ease.
Primary Applications
While it can be used for personal transit analysis, the SBC is incredibly demanding to calculate by hand. Today, its most prominent traditional applications lie outside of individual horoscopes:
