Karkidaka masam or Karkadika month, also known as Ramayana masam, begins on July 17, 2021 as per traditional Malayalam calendar followed in Kerala. Karkidaka masam is the last month in Kerala and it marks the ending of Kollavarsham 2021-2022 and Chingam Month 1 marks the beginning of Kollavarsham 2021-2022.
During this month no auspicious events or programs are performed but the Epic Ramayana is read throughout the month. In 2021, Ramayana masam begins on July 17 and ends on August 16.
Reciting of Ramayana begins on the first day of Karkidakam and ends on the last day of the month. It is believed that those who visit the temples of Lord Rama or Vishnu and offer puja to the Lord in the month of Karkidakam will get Moksha. Karkidaka vavubali is the major ritual observed during Karkidakam month.
