Puri Shankaracharya Swami Adhokshjanand pitches for Pollution free Godavari & Shipra for Kumbh Mela 2015.
Irked over high pollution level of Godavari and Shipra rivers, Shankaracharya of Puri Swami Adhokshyanada has shot off a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a plan for the purification of both rivers and a written assurance in this regard. The next Kumbh would be held on the banks of these two rivers in coming 15 months.
He also expressed his dissatisfaction over absence of pollution free water in Ganga in the ongoing Magh Mela. Stating that resentment was brewing among seers and saints on the issue, he also castigated Union minister for water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation Uma Bharati for announcing from Magh Mela campus that it would take years to make Ganga pollution free.
In his letter, the Shankaracharya observed “Kumbh Mela is a major event of the Sanatan Dharma as saints and seers from all corners of the country assemble to take a holy dip. However, both rivers are in a pathetic condition and highly polluted. What is Centre’s action plan to make the two rivers pollution free in the coming 15 months.”
It is pertinent to mention that first Kumbh will be organised at Nasik on river Godavari during July-August in 2015. The second Kumbh will be organised at Ujjain on river Shipra in April 2016. In his letter, the Shankaracharya wrote: “Will saints and seers will once again face pessimism like Magh Mela or will they be ensured of pollution-free water for bathing and achman.”
Stating that people wanted that both the rivers be made pollution free and usable for Kumbh Mela, he asked the Centre to make the action plan public.
