For Onam 2014, Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple will be opened for the Onam festival on Friday afternoon (5 September 2014).
The sanctum sanctorum will be opened by Melsanthi Sri. P.N Narayanan Nampoothiri at 5.30 p.m.The melsanthi will be accompaneed to the sreekovil by Chief priest Brahmasree Kandaru Rajeevararu and the Executive Officer, Sabarimala.
The temple rituals will begin with an Ashtadravya Maha Ganapati Homom on saturday morning.
The Tantri, assisted by the Melsanthi, prepared the holy water (kalasom) in 1,000 copper urns and the Brahmakalasom in a golden urn for the Sahasrakalasabhishekom to be held prior to the Utchapuja (afternoon prayer) on Saturday.
Kalabhabhishekom, Udayasthamanapuja, Pushpabhishekom and Padipuja will be other important rituals to be performed at the hill temple on Saturday.
The Melsanthi will host the Uthradasadya, feast served on the Uthradom day during Onam, to the Devaswom staff and devotees at the Sannidhanam (main shrine site atop the hill) after the Utchapuja on Saturday.
The preparations for the feast began with the Tantri cutting vegetables at the temple kitchen on friday evening.
The ‘Onasadya’ (feast) on the Thiruvonam day at the Sannidhanam will be hosted by a devotee after the Utchapuja on Sunday.
The Devaswom staff will offer a feast to the devotees at the Sannidhanam on Monday. The Ayyappa temple will be closed after the Athazhapuja, marking the culmination of the Onam festival, on Tuesday evening.
