The name, Varaņasi possibly originates from the names of the two rivers: Varuna, still flowing in Varanasi, and Asi, a small stream near Assi Ghat. Another speculation is that the city derives its name from the river Varuna, which was called Varanasi in olden times. Varanasi also Benares, Banaras or Kashi, is a holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism and Jainism. Hindus believe that death at Varanasi brings salvation. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and the oldest in India.
Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the holiest of Shiva temples. The main deity is known by the name Vishwanatha or Vishweshwara meaning Ruler of the Universe. The temple town, which claims to be the oldest living city in the world, with 3500 years of documented history, is also called Kashi and hence, the temple is popularly called as Kashi Vishwanath Temple.
Ayodhya is closely associated with Rama, seventh incarnation of Vishnu. According to the Ramayana, the city was founded by Manu, the first man in the Vedas, and law-giver of the Hindus. Other sources hold that it was founded by its namesake, King Ayudh. For centuries, it was the capital for the Surya dynasty, of which Lord Rama was the most celebrated king. At the time, it was known as Kaushaldesa.
Skanda and other puranas list Ayodhya as one of the seven most sacred cities of India, as it has been the backdrop for much of Hindu scripture. The Atharvaveda described Ayodhya as “a City built by God and being prosperous as paradise itself.” Elements of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Islam can be found in the city. The cities of Ayutthaya, Thailand, and Yogyakarta, Indonesia, are named after Ayodhya.
Allahabad, also known as Prayag, or “Place of Offerings”, comes from its position at the sacred union of the rivers: Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati. It is the second-oldest city in India and plays a central role in the Hindu scriptures.
Allahabad is also known as the “City of Prime Ministers” because post-independence seven out of 13 prime ministers of India belonged to Allahabad (Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Gulzari Lal Nanda, Vishwanath Pratap Singh and Chandra Shekhar). All these seven leaders were either born in Allahabad, were alumni of Allahabad University, or were elected from a constituency in Allahabad.
