Guru Dwadashi is one of the grand festivals for the devotees of Sri Guru Datta or Dattatreya. In 2022, Guru Dwadashi date is October 22.
It is celebrated on 12th day in Krishna paksha of Ashwin month or Ashwayuja masam in Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, and Telugu calendars. On this day, SriPada Sri Vallabha swamy concluded his incarnation hence this festival is also celebrated as Sripada Vallabha Avathara Samapthi Dinotsavam.
Guru Dwadasi marks the biggest celebrations in Sripada Sri Vallabha Kshetram in Pithapuram of Andhra Pradesh. It is celebrated for several days in Pithapuram Datta Kshetram.
Guru Dwadashi is also celebrated in grand manner at Gangapur Dattatreya Temple in Karnataka. The festival is celebrated for four days in the temple which marks the culmination on Deepavali. On Ashwin Krishna Chaturdasi day, thousands of devotees lead a procession for Ashta Theerthams. Some devotees start Gurucharitra Parayana on Sripada Vallabha Jayanthi and conclude on Guru Dwadashi day.
Guru Dwadashi is known as Wagh Baras in Gujarat, Vasubaras in Maharashtra, Govatsa Dwadashi or Vyaghra Dwadashi in rest of India.
