Aadi Karthigai (Aadi Krithiga), is an important festival dedicated to Lord Muruga. It is celebrated on Krithigai nakshatra day in Aadi month of Tamil calendar. The Skanda Purana describes the legend associated with Aadi Karthigai.

Aadi Karthigai 2026 (Aadi Krithiga 2026) date is August 7.

Aadi Karthigai is celebrated with lot of gusto in Aarupadai Veedu (six prominent temples) of Lord Muruga. Special pujas and homas are performed on Aadi Karthigai day to please Murugan. Kavadi Yatra (carrying kavadis and offering kavadis to the Lord) is the main ritual of Aadi Karthigai day.

Because the month of Aadi marks the beginning of the sun’s southward transit (Dakshinayana), a period deeply charged with spiritual energy, this specific Krithigai is considered the most auspicious of the entire year for Murugan devotees.

The Divine Legend Behind the Festival

According to Hindu puranas, Lord Shiva sparked six divine sparks from his third eye to create a supreme warrior capable of destroying the demon Surapadman. These sparks were deposited into the sacred Saravana Poigai lake, where they manifested as six beautiful divine babies.

  • The Krithika Maidens: Six maidens, known as the Karthigai Pengal, found the babies and nursed them with immense love and care.

  • The Manifestation: When Goddess Parvati hugged the six children together, they merged into a single grand deity with six faces and twelve hands—Shanmuga (or Murugan).

  • The Blessing: Highly pleased by the devotion of the six maidens, Lord Shiva blessed them, decreeing that whenever the Krithigai star falls, special worship dedicated to Murugan would be conducted, and those who pray to him on this day will have all their obstacles completely shattered.

Dynamic Rituals & High-Energy Offerings

The atmosphere during Aadi Krithigai is electric, filled with intense devotion, vibrant colors, and thunderous sounds.

The Kavadi Attam (The Dance of Burden)

The most defining aspect of Aadi Krithigai is the offering of Kavadi. Devotees carry a semicircular wooden canopy decorated with flowers, peacock feathers (the mount of Murugan), and brass bells across their shoulders.

  • To fulfillment vows, many devotees walk barefoot for miles to reach his hilltop temples.

  • The procession moves to high-octane, traditional percussion beats (Kavadi Chindu). The rhythmic, booming energy of the drums inspires a deep, trance-like devotion among the carriers as they dance their way up the temple steps.

Piercing and Penance

As an act of supreme surrender and control over the senses, many devotees pierce their cheeks, tongues, or skin with small silver spears called Vel (Murugan’s divine weapon). This ritual is done to seek protection, cure chronic illnesses, or overcome heavy debts and adversaries.

Abhishekam and Offerings

Inside the shrines, Lord Murugan is bathed in sacred ingredients like panchamirtham (a sweet mix of five ingredients), tender coconut water, milk, sandalwood paste, and vibhuti (holy ash). Devotees offer vast amounts of red flowers and light ghee lamps to invoke his grace.

Major Celebration Hubs

While every Murugan temple across the world celebrates this day, the grandest celebrations occur at his Arupadai Veedu (the Six Abodes of Murugan) in Tamil Nadu:

  1. Tiruttani: Famous for its massive sea of devotees carrying flower-decked Pushpa Kavadis.

  2. Palani: Where millions gather to offer milk pots (Paal Kudam) and tons of panchamirtham.

  3. Swamimalai, Pazhamudircholai, Tirupparankunram, and Tiruchendur.

Spiritual Benefits of Fasting

Devotees observe a strict fast (Vratam) on this day, waking up before dawn and breaking it only after visiting a temple or performing evening prayers at home. Praying on Aadi Krithigai is believed to:

  • Dissolve the malefic effects of Mars (Chevvai/Mangal Dosha), as Murugan is the ruling deity of the planet Mars.

  • Bring immense courage, mental clarity, and victory over life’s daily struggles.

  • Bless families with prosperity, unity, and good health.
