Swaminarayan Jayanti, the birthday of Lord Swaminarayan, is celebrated on the ninth day in bright half of Chaitra month (Chaitra Sud Nom). In 2014, Swaminarayan Jayanti date is April 8.
Bhagvan Swaminarayan was born on 2 April 1781 in Chhapiya near Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh. He was the founder of Swaminarayan Faith (modern Vaishnava Hinduism) and believed as the incarnation of Lord Vishnu from the Nara-Narayana deity pair. Bhagvan Swaminarayan was born at 10.10 pm. To mark this shubh muhurat, special Aarti is performed at this time in all Swaminarayan Mandirs.
Originally known as Ghanshyam Pande, Bhagvan Swaminarayan, was given the name of Sahajanand Swami by his guru Ramanand Swami and handed over the Uddhav Sampraday to him. While addressing a gathering Sahajananda taught Swaminarayan Mantra. Since then he was known as Bhagavan Swaminarayan and the Sampraday as Swaminarayan Sampraday.
Swaminarayan Jayanti is celebrated with utmost gaiety and fervor in all Swaminarayan Temples around the world. The same day is also celebrated as Sri Ram Navami.
