In the diamond city, Surat, this particular year 2013 is 100 per cent green Ganesh Utsav. The city is proud to announce that not a single idol of Ganesh is made or sold of Plaster of Paris (POP). In this city there will be around 8,000 Ganesh pandals and at least 25,000 Ganesh idols on display.
According to the Surat Ganesh Utsav Mandal, president, Anil Biscuitwala, “We have started a campaign of tree plantation along with Ganesh Utsav. Nearly 25,000 new trees will be planted.” In order to distribution of the saplings to the Ganesh devotees, the mandal has successfully set up offices at Katargam, Bhagal, Varacha , Udhna, Limbayat, Sachin, Rander-Adajan and Parle Point.
Further Biscutwala said, “We are keeping a tab on people preparing idols from POP. We will register a case against them. We will ensure that there are no POP idols this year in the city. We are also encouraging the trend of metal idols. These can be symbolically immersed.”
According to the words of Surat Murtikar Sangh member, “We use dry grass to make a firm base for the idol. If the whole idol is made up of clay, it would become too heavy.”
A one feet idol is selling at Rs 3000. A 9-feet idol, the maximum height permissible, is selling for 40,000. These rates are not much. The labour charges have shot up. Previously we used to make five idols in a day.”
Steps have be taken to erect pandals in such a way that it doesn’t affect the traffic movement in Surat.
