The Skanda Purana is one of the eighteen Puranas, and it contains the details of Lord Skanda who is the son of Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati. The text is considered as very holy by the Kaumara sects of people, who worship Lord Muruga as their chief god.

This text describes his war with the demons such as Surapadman, and about his wonderful miracles performed in the life of his devotees, and it also mentions about his brother Vinayaka, and about his parents Shiva and Parvati. Lord Skanda is also called as Muruga, Kumara, Vadivela, Senthil Andava and by various other names, is worshipped mainly by the Tamil speaking people. His six main temples are situated in Tamil Nadu, and they are considered as very sacred temples of Lord Muruga. In this Purana, his marriage with Valli and Devasena is also mentioned, and this famous Purana was written by the great sage Sri Veda Vyasa and Lord Murugan’s vehicle divine peacock is also mentioned in this sacred Purana.

BIRTH AND CHILDHOOD PLAYS OF LORD MURUGA

Lord Muruga was born out of the third eye spark of Lord Shiva, and hence is called as Shiva Kumara. He was brought up by the star goddesses, also known as Karthigai Pengal. The main purpose of the birth of Lord Muruga is to destroy the evil demon Surapadman and his brothers, in order to maintain peace in the entire universe. Bala Murugan had done lot of playful activities similar to Lord Krishna, like fighting playfully with the devas, putting Lord Brahma in prison, conveying the meaning of Pranava Mantra, “OM”, to Lord Shiva etc.

SIGNIFICANCE OF LORD MURUGA

We must have to consider that Lord Muruga is everything in our life. Lord Muruga is the beloved son of Parvati and Parameswara, brother of the first god, Vinayaka, and he also contains great powers similar to his parents. In the Muruga Purana, it was mentioned, that the entire universe was found in the two eyes of Lord Muruga. People are supposed to worship Lord Muruga at this difficult Kali Yuga, since Lord Muruga is declared to be the true god of Kali Yuga.

In the first Krita Yuga, Lord Brahma is considered as the supreme deity, since he has created so many things in the universe. In the second Treta yuga, Lord Vishnu is considered as the supreme deity, due to his holy Rama Avatar. In the third Dwapara Yuga, Lord Krishna is considered as the supreme god, and instead of considering him as an avatar of Lord Vishnu, people have considered him as a separate independent god. In this fourth Kali Yuga, Lord Muruga also called as Subramanya is considered as the powerful god of Hinduism.

Lord Muruga was born from the third eye spark of Lord Shiva, only after Shiva meditates on him. Hence Lord Muruga has to be worshipped as a special independent god in this Kali Yuga, those who sincerely worships him, need not worry about the evil effects of Kali Purusha.

Lord Vajrabahu was the younger brother of Lord Veerabahu, and he was born out of the powers of Ma Shakti Devi. When Veerabahu has requested Ma Shakti Devi to arrange for a suitable Assistant to accompany with him in the war, Ma Shakti Devi has created the great Vajrabahu and sent him along with Veerabahu. Along with the Navaveeras, and with his brother Veerabahu, Vajrabahu fought bravely with the army of Demon Surapadman and made the demon soldiers to flee away from the battle field.

The great Vajrabahu was praised in the Skanda Purana, and he was mentioned as the victorious brother of Lord Veerabahu. He along with the Navaveeras is classified as Dasaveeras. Sri Veera Kumarar was the son of Lord Veerabahu who is worshipped as a Hindu deity, and he served as the Army Head of Lord Muruga. In order to assist him, towards fighting with the demon Surapadman, Lord Veerabahu prayed to Lord Muruga to grant him a pious and a brave son. Due to his sincere prayers, Sri Veera Kumarar took birth as the son of Veerabahu, and it is believed that Sri Veera Kumarar is an aspect of the Divine spear (Vel) of Lord Muruga. Sri Veera Kumarar joined with the army of his father Veerabahu, fought bravely with the soldiers of the demon Surapadman, and also easily defeated his army, with the blessings of Lord Muruga. Ma Shakti Devi also granted lot of boons to Sri Veera Kumarar, and as a result, Sri Veera Kumarar has got tremendous powers, enough to fight with anyone in the universe.
