Kajari Navami 2026

Kajari Navami is observed in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh in Shravan Month. In 2026, Kajari Navami date is August 22.

It falls on Shukla Paksha Navami in Sawan Maas as per Hindi calendars followed in above regions.

Kajari Navami marks the beginning of Kajari Purnima celebrations. Pooja room is cleaned and sanctified with cow dung and decorated with rice flour rangoli designs. The clay which brought by the women from the forest or the borders of the village is worshipped on this day.

The Rituals of Kajari Navami

The actions performed on Navami set the stage for the entire festival. They must be done in a specific order:

1.Collecting the Earth:

Women go to the agricultural fields to gather fertile soil, bringing it back to their homes in small, traditional cups made from leaves.

2.Sowing the Seeds:

Barley or wheat seeds—representing the primary staple crops of the region—are planted into the soil within these leaf cups.

3.Preparing the Dark Room:

A specific room or corner of the house is cleaned and ritually purified using a mixture of mud and cow dung. The space is deliberately sealed off from fresh air and sunlight, forcing the seeds to germinate entirely in the dark over the coming week.

4.Drawing the Navami Alpana:

The floor around where the cups are placed is decorated with traditional alpana (rangoli) made from a liquid rice-water solution. To be considered auspicious, the design must include four mandatory figures: a house, a child in a cradle, a mongoose, and a woman holding a water pitcher.

Once this sequence is completed on Navami, the sprouting seeds become the focal point of the household’s devotion. The women worship the cups daily in that dark room until the evening of Kajari Purnima, when the grown sprouts are carried in procession and immersed in a local water body.
