Importance of Sholingaswami Temple, Somalingapuram, Kannivadi

Sri Sholingaswami Temple is located in Somalingapuram village at Kannivadi town in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. There is also Lord Vinayaka statue under Neem and Vilwa trees within the shrine premises.

This particular shrine is situated at the foot hill of Harikesha Parvatham. In another angle the hill also looks like a Shivalinga.  There is a Nandhi in front of the Lord Shiva’s shrine.  The hill’s shape looks like the divine snake Adishesha is holding an umbrella.

In this shrine, festivals celebrated are Tirukarthikai in November-December, Aadi Amavasya-new moon day in July-August, Chitra Poornima in April-May, Shivrathri in February-March and Annabishekam in October-November. Moreover all Pradosham days which falls on the 13th day from new moon or full moon days are grandly celebrated in this shrine.

The primary deity of this shrine is Sholingaswami, Thala Virutcham is Vilwa and Theertham is Vedhi theertham.  As per the local legends, this shrine is nearly 500 years old.

In this shrine, special rituals and prayers are done on Pradosham, Shivrathri, Amavasya and Poornima days. The other sacred places surrounding this shrine are sage Agasthya sacred spring known as Veda Theertha and Saint Meikandar’s cave. An ancient book titled Jalathirattu has cited about this place named Kannivadi.

Hindu religious ardent followers plus admirers from nook and corner of Tamil Nadu visit this shrine in order to decrease the bad effects of the past birth, for better health and removal of hurdles in marriage discussions. On the other hand, women ardent followers plus admirers pray for the longevity of husbands and safety of their mangal sutras.
