Lord Shiva is also called as Sarpa Abharana Moorthy, since he wears a pious snake around his neck. The reason for wearing the snake Vasuki on his neck is to show that he would always protect his devotees from difficulties and dangers, and also safeguards them from snake bites and from poisonous fevers.
The Divine snake King Vasuki, who is the brother of Ma Manasa Devi, a form of Ma Shakti Devi, has become an ornament to Lord Shiva, since Lord Shiva had consumed his poison during the time of churning of the Divine ocean Parkadal, and also gave refuge to him, in order to safeguard him from his enemy Lord Garuda.
Shiva is also called as Pashupathinath, the divine saviour of all living beings, including birds and animals, and hence he gave a permanent place to Vasuki on his neck.
Though Vasuki had dwelled in the neck of Lord Shiva, but he would never give any time of irritation to him, and instead of that, he gives him a pleasant feeling, by gently rubbing Shiva’s neck through his mouth, in order to show his great devotion on him.
Another reason for wearing snake Vasuki on his neck is to show the significance of the snake deities amongst the Devas, Demons and to the people living in the earth. Snakes are considered as worshipful reptiles, and they would never cause harm to us, but however, if we try to cause harm to them, then they would attack us through its poisonous teeth which would generate Venom. Deva Rishi Narada, Tumburu and Prahalada used to frequently visit the Naga Loka during the previous Yugas, and there, they would get nice treatment from the Nagas.
But we are not giving proper respect to the snakes, and whenever we come across any snake, immediately we used to search for any sticks in order to beat the snake for the purpose of killing it. Whoever cause any harm to the snakes would be subject to severe Naga Dosha, in their forthcoming births, and as a result, they would suffer from lot of problems in their life, like poor health, poor financial position, delay in marriage, unemployment problems etc.
Hence let us worship the snakes by frequently visiting its burrows which would be mostly available in Amman Temples, and let us pour some milk in the snake burrows, in order to show our great love and affection on those lovely reptiles.
