Pavithrothsavam at Srirangam Temple

Pavithrothsavam is a big festival celebrated at Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple of Srirangam. It is held in Aani month in Tamil calendar (August – September). Pavithrothsavam is dedicated to the sacred thread worn by the Lord and for removing blemishes in daily rituals.

On the first day of Pavitrotsavams, thiruvaradhanam is conducted for 365 times to the Utsavar in the Yagasalai. On the second day, thiruvaradhanam is conducted for 1008 times in the sanctum sanctorum for all the deities and are fully covered with holy thread which is named as boocandi sevai(Angobanga Sevai).

Pavitrotsavam is a festival observed to rectify the defects happened in daily poojas performed to Lord.

This festival conducted in Cheranai vendran mandabam alias Pavithra mandabam which was established by Jadavarma Sundarapandian.

As per the legends, Pavitrotsavam first started by Brahma. Due to this festival Holy Cotton thread Garland (pavithram) being worn to all idols.
