Nimba Kusuma Bakshanam is a popular ritual observed on Ugadi festival. Ugadi is the Telugu and Kannada New Year day which falls on Chaitra Shukla Padyami, the first day of Chaitra Masam in Amavasyant Panchangams followed in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
‘Nimba’ means the Neem, Kusuma means the flowers and Bakshana means eating. It is a ritual of eating the recipe prepared with Neem flowers i.e.. Ugadi Pachchadi (Bevu Bella).
We should eat Ugadi Pachchadi which has all six tastes – jaggery (sweet), neem flowers (for bitter), tamarind juice (sour), mango pieces (tang), black pepper (hot) and salt (saltiness).
Eating this recipe called ‘Ugadi Pachadi’ prevents us suffering from seasonal diseases and allergies.
And the recipe also indicates that life is a mixture of all the tastes and experiences such as – happiness, sorrow, troubles, problems, joy, etc.. One should be able to face all the challenges in life and progress towards success and happiness.
