Today, 23 May 2013 is Narasimha Jayanti, Narasimha Chaturdashi, the first appearance day of Lord Narasimha Swamy, the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Narsingha is the half-lion and half-man incarnation who appeared on the earth to annihilate Hiranyakashipu. Sri Vaishnava Narasimha Jayanti date is May 24.
Narasimha Jayanti or Chaturdashi falls on the Chaturdashi day in Shukla Paksha of Vaishakh Month in Hindu calendar.
The depictions of the avatar of Narasimha are contained in all these Puranas. There are short reference related to this particular Lord in earliest of Vaishnav Upanishads, a Gopal Tapani Upanishad (Narasimha tapani Upanisad) and Mahabharat (3.272.56-60).
There is a good evidence in the form of stone sculpture from the Hoysaleswara Temple in place known as Halebidu, in the state of Karnataka that depict Vishnu as Narasimha kills demon named Hiranyakashipu.
In the Simhachalam temple (Andhra Pradesh), there is a Lord Narasimha rock statue in the backyard.
Yadagirigutta Narasimha Swamy Temple, Simhachalam Temple, Nachagiri Lakshmi Nrusimha Swamy Temple, Ahobilam Navanarasimha Swamy Kshetram, and many temples in Andhra Pradesh are the best places to visit during Narasimha Jayanti. Bidar Narsimha Swamy Temple is one of the popular Temples dedicated to Lord Narasimha in Karnataka.
