Marundeeswarar Temple, Tiruvanmiyur, Chennai

Sri Marundeeswarar temple is located in the village named Tiruvanmiyur, in the district of Chennai, in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. The chief deity of this temple is Marundeeswarar (Lord Shiva) and his consort is Tiripurasundari. The festival deity of this temple is Thyagarajar.

The holy tree of this temple is Vanni. The holy water of this temple is Pancha Theertham. The agamam or pooja of this temple is known as Kameekam. This temple is nearly 1000-2000 years old in this region. The historical name of this place is Tiru Vanmikiyur.

According to the scholars and pundits, “ The temple is praised in the Thevaram hymns of Saint Tirunavukkarasar and by Arunagiriar. “Lord of Tiruvanmiyur appears before the devotee praising His endless merciful traits and removes the illusion in the dull mind.” Saint Tirunavukkarasar. This is the 25th temple in Thondai region praised in Thevaram hymns.”

The most important festival of this temple are Shivrathri in February-March, Panguni Brahmmotsavam in March- April, Vinayaka Chaturti, full moon days Kruthika star days, Skanda Sashti in October-November, Vaikunta Ekadashi, Pournima, Amavasya, Navarathri, Masi month and other Lord Shiva related festivals are celebrated with great devotion and dedication.

In this temple, Chaturvastam designed is the presiding deity. The temple is open for pilgrims and devotees from 6.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. In this shrine, Lord Vinayaka is largely known as Vigneswara.  In this temple, Pongal-pudding is wholeheartedly offered as nivedhana to Lord. The shrine has 5 tier Rajagopuram.
