Kurma Jayanti 2017 | Kurma Jayanthi on Vaishakh Purnima

Kurma Jayanti is the first appearance day of Lord Kurma, the tortoise incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Kurma Jayanthi is observed on Vaishakh Purnima, the Full Moon day in Vaishakh month (May) in Hindu calendar. In 2017, Kurma Jayanti date is May 10. In some places, it is observed on Nirjala Ekadashi, June 5.

The main purpose of Kurma avatara (second avatar of Vishnu) was to become a base for Samudra Manthan (churning of the Ocean).

On Lord Kurma, Mandara mountain was set and with the help of Vasuki (serpent king), Gods and demons successfully finished Samudra Madhanam.

Kurma Jayanthi is celebrated with much gusto in Sri Kurmam Sri Kurmanatha swami temple in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh.

In 2015, Kurma Jayanti date was May 4. In 2014, Kurma Jayanti date was May 14. In some places, it was observed on Nirjala Ekadashi, June 9.

In 2013, Kurma Jayanti date was May 24. In some places, it was observed on Nirjala Ekadashi, 19/20 June 2013.

Kurma Jayanti 2012 date was May 5. In some places of India, Kurma Jayanti was also observed on Nirjala Ekadasi (May 31, 2012).

      In fact both are correct.. In some places, Kurma Jayanti is celebrated on Vaishakh Purnima in some places on Nirjala Ekadasi.. (May 5 / June 1, 2012)…
