Tulsi Amla Trees – Tulsi Vivah

Chiluku Dwadashi (Ksheerabdi Dwadashi or Yogini Dwadashi) is the day to worship Tulsi and Damodar (Lord Vishnu). In 2025, Chiluku Dwadashi date is November 2.

Chilku Dwadasi is observed on Dwadashi, the next day of Prabhodhini Ekadashi, in bright half of Karthik month. On this day, devotees celebrate the marriage of Tulsi and Damodar. Tulsi Saligram Vivah is the main ritual of the day.

Devotees sanctify the place where Tulsi Vrindavan plant is erected and decorated with the leaves and branches of Amla. A branch with fruits of Amla is planted in Tulsi Vrindavan and worshipped. Tulsi Damodar Vivah is performed in the evening.

Significance

  • Chilku Dwadashi marks the day after Prabhodhini Ekadashi, which commemorates Vishnu waking from his cosmic slumber (yoganidra) that began on Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi.

  • The day is linked to the churning of the cosmic ocean (Ksheer Sagar Manthan) for amrit (nectar), earning it the names “Ksheerabdi Dwadashi” (Milky Ocean Dwadashi), “Chilku Dwadashi” (from the act of churning), and “Madhan Dwadashi”.

  • It celebrates the celestial marriage (Tulsi Vivah) of Tulsi (considered an incarnation of Lakshmi) and Lord Vishnu/Shaligram (Salagrama Shila), or sometimes Vishnu embodied as the Amla Tree.

  • It also coincides with the completion of the Chaturmasya vrata (four-month penance) observed by many devotees.

Rituals and Observance

  • Devotees perform special prayers and decorate the Tulsi Vrindavan (altar) with amla (gooseberry) branches and fruits.

  • The main ritual is Tulsi Vivah, symbolizing the wedding of Tulsi and Vishnu, often enacted with a Saligrama Shila or Damodar idol.

  • Evening puja involves lighting lamps (deepa-aradhana), ceremonial marriage rites, offering sweets, flowers, and fruits to the deities.

  • Charity, especially feeding Brahmins and giving cows (Godaana), is considered highly meritorious.

  • Women especially observe this festival with great devotion, seeking prosperity and happiness for their families.

Regional Variations

  • In Karnataka, it is called Tulasi Habba.

  • In Tamil Nadu, it aligns with Karthigai Masam.

  • In Odisha, it coincides with Garuda Dwadashi and is a prominent event at the Puri Jagannath temple.

  • The festival is also known as Utthana Dwadashi, Yogini Dwadashi, or Vrinda Dwadashi in various regions.

Key Beliefs

  • Worshipping Lord Vishnu and Tulsi on this day grants great spiritual merit and wellbeing.

  • Offering Tulsi to Vishnu is especially auspicious, as Tulsi is considered the dearest to him.

Chilku Dwadashi is a spiritually significant day celebrating the divine union of Tulsi and Vishnu, the conclusion of Chaturmasya, and the cosmic awakening of Lord Vishnu, observed with rituals that promote prosperity, devotion, and harmony.
