Eruvaka Purnima 2026 | Farmers Festival in Andhra Pradesh & Telangana

Eruvaka Purnima or Eruvaka Punnami is a special festival celebrated in many parts of South India, especially in Andhra Pradesh & Telangana. Usually, Eruvaka Purnima falls on Purnima y in Jyeshta masam (the full moon day in Jyeshta masam). In 2026, Eruvaka Purnima date is June 29.

It falls on the Purnima day which comes after Mrigashira Karthe or Mirgami (Mirgam). It is believed that even little showers happened on Mrigashira Karthe day, that year would be a wonderful year for farmers. Eruvaka Purnima is also known as Krushi Purnima in other parts of India.

The word Eru means “plough” or “farming,” and Eruvaka refers to the first lines drawn in the soil by the plough.

How It Is Celebrated

Before the heavy rains start, farmers take a day to honor the earth and the animals that help them grow food. Here is what happens during the festival:

  • Honoring the Bulls: Farmers give their bulls and oxen a thorough wash, massage them with oil, and paint their horns in bright colors. They dress the animals up with bells, flower garlands, and new ropes.

  • A Well-Deserved Rest: The cattle are not put to work on this day. Instead, they are fed special sweets like bobbatlu and paraded through the village with music and dancing.

  • Worshipping the Tools: The ploughs and yokes are washed and decorated with turmeric and kumkum (red powder).

  • Sowing the First Seeds: Farmers pray to Bhudevi (Mother Earth) for a good harvest and symbolically sow a mix of nine different seeds, called Navadhanya, to start the planting season.

When Is It?

It is usually celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Jyeshtha or Ashadha, right as the southwest monsoon winds reach the area.

In 2026, Eruvaka Purnima falls on Monday, June 29.
