Basanti Puja or Basant Navratri Durga Pooja is observed during Basant Navratri mainly in Bengal. Basant Navratri is the nine-day festival dedicated to Goddess Durga and in Bengal it is observed for last 3-5 days of Navratri. In 2026, Basanti Puja starts on March 25 and ends on March 28.

In some areas, this festival is celebrated for 3-5 days, starting on Chaitra Shukla Saptami and ends on Chaitra Shukla Navami i.e. Ram Navami or Dashami.

During Basanti Puja, some rituals are performed same as that of Durga Puja. Kalash Sthapana, Kumari Puja, Suhasini Pooja, etc are also observed during the festival. But it is not much significant as Durga Puja.

Basanti Puja Ashtami 2026 – 26 March 2026 – Sandhi Puja, Annapurna Puja)

Basanti Puja Navami 2026 – 27 March 2026 – Nabami Puja)

Basanti Puja Dashami 2026 – 28 March 2026 – Dashami Puja Bisarjan)

When is Basanti Puja Celebrated?

Basanti Puja is observed during Chaitra Shukla Paksha (waxing moon of Chaitra), usually around March–April.

The main days include:

  • Saptami – Invocation of Goddess Durga

  • Ashtami – Special worship and offerings

  • Navami – Final rituals and prayers

The festival often coincides with Rama Navami in some years.

 Historical Significance

According to tradition:

  • Rama worshipped Goddess Durga in spring before fighting Ravana.

  • This early form of Durga worship became known as Basanti Puja.

Later, autumn worship (Sharadiya Durga Puja) became more popular.

Rituals

Common rituals during Basanti Puja include:

  1. Kalash Sthapana – Establishing the sacred pot.

  2. Durga Saptashati recitation.

  3. Pushpanjali (flower offerings).

  4. Sandhi Puja between Ashtami and Navami.

  5. Bhog offerings such as fruits, sweets, and prasad.

 Why It Is Called “Basanti”

The word Basanti comes from Vasant (spring).
The worship celebrates:

  • Renewal of nature

  • Divine feminine energy

  • Prosperity and protection

Yellow flowers and spring decorations are commonly used.

  • West Bengal, Assam & Bangladesh
