Arudra Darshan, 28 December 2012: Thiruvathirai Festival

Today, 28 December 2012 is Arudra Darshan, Arudra Darshanam, Thiruvathirai festival in Tamil Nadu. It falls on Thiruvadirai Nakshatra in Margazhi Month, mostly on Pournami tithi.

Arudra Darshanam is celebrated with utmost gusto in Thiruvannamalai Arunachaleswar Kovil, Chidambaram Natarajar Swamy Koil and Uthirakosamangai Shiva Temple in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu.

10-day temple festival is celebrated during Arudra Darshanam in Thillai Chidambaram Nataraja Temple. Maha Abhishekam is performed at 3 AM to Lord Nataraja and Goddess Sivakamasundari.

It is believed that Lord Shiva performs “Shiva Tandavam” (Cosmic Dance) on this day.

Arudra Darshanam festival is also celebrated in Kerala as Thiruvathira festival.
