Archanai & Abhishekam

Our ancient Hindu tradition is widely followed since Vedic period, and it is very popular throughout the world. This tradition acts as the foundation for the spiritual development, and even some of the foreigners are very much interested to follow our ancient Hindu tradition and culture, and due to that, they are regularly visiting our famous temples like Thiruvanammalai Arunachaleswarar Temple, and Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple. Our ancient sages and forefathers have strictly followed the ancient Hindu tradition in their lives, and as a result, they have lived their life in a prosperous manner.

In the temples, without doing Archanai and Abhishekham the puja of a devotee is incomplete. Those who want to prosper in their lives must compulsorily do Archanai and Abhishekham to the deities, since by doing that good act, the deities present in the temples would be pleased, and would grant boons to us.

Archanai: This would be done by a devotee in a temple, by telling his name or his near and dear ones, and some devotees used to do Archanai in the name of the almighty. Archanai would be usually done during auspicious festival days, and also it would be done by the devotees during their birthday/marriage day. Before doing Archanai, we have to fetch the Archanai set from the shops present nearby the temple, and in that set, coconuts, flowers and bananas would be there. We have to submit the Archanai set to the temple priest, and then we have to tell our Name, Gothram and Star to him. After performing the Archanai by chanting the divine mantras, the priest would return the Archanai set to us, and he would also bless us.

Abhishekam: It is a method of pleasing the deities present inside the temples. Abhishekam means performance of holy bath to the deities. We can perform abhishekam to the gods and goddesses using tender coconut water, milk, ghee, curd, Gingelly oil, honey and fruit juices etc. For doing abhishekam either we ourselves can fetch the materials required for abhishekam, or otherwise by paying the prescribed fees to the temple office, we can do the abhishekam. In some Shiva temples, we ourselves can do milk and other abhishekham to the holy Shiva Lingam, but in most of the temples, only the temple priest is eligible to do it, since it requires lot of purity and cleanliness.

While performing the Abhishekam, the priest would recite the sacred mantras, and also would show Deeparadhana to the deities. After performing the abhishekam, the holy Prasad would be offered to the devotees. Devotees can consume it, in order to get the grace of the god, as well as they can get relieved from their various diseases. During Thursdays, doing Abhishekham to Guru Dakshinamoorthy is a good act, since the great divine guru would give good knowledge, wisdom and will power to win in our life.

Ancient Alwars and Nayanmars have dedicated their entire lives towards performing puja and Abhishekham to the deities, and it is very good to do Archana and Abhishekam at the present stage of life, since we are suffering a lot from the deadly “CORONA VIRUS”.
