Sri Azhagirinathar temple is situated in the heart of Salem in the district of Salem, in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. The main deity of this shrine is Azhagirinathar, (Lord Krishna) and his consorts are Sundaravalli.
The holy tree of this shrine is none. The holy water of this temple is Vanjula Pushkarini. The agamam or pooja of this temple is called as Vaikanasa. This temple is about 500-1000 years old in this location. The historical name of this sacred spot is none.
The significant festivals of this shrine are Krishna Jayanthi in August-September, Vaiakasi car festival in May-June; Hanuman Jayanthi, Vaikunta Ekadasi in November-January and Sri Rama Navami in March-April; are celebrated. The temple is open from 6.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 5.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m for all. In a standing posture, Presiding deity Lord Azhagirinathar from the sanctum sanctorum graces the devotees.
All the Lord Krishna and Rama related festive days and auspicious days are celebrated in grand manner in this particular temple with large participation of local residents and devotees plus pilgrims from far and near. During all the important religious days and auspicious days are marked with long hours in this temple. According to the local legends and pundits, “Devotees participate in Sri Andal Wedding festival for removal of adverse effects on their wedding matters. They also pray to Lord Santhana Gopalakrishnan under the Punnai tree in the temple for child boon. Devotees perform Tirumanjanam to Perumal and offer vastras.”
