15 November 2012: Bhai Dooj, Bhau Beej

Today, 15 November 2012 is Bhai Dooj (Bhau Beej). It is the fifth and final day of Diwali celebrations. It falls on Shukla Paksha Dwitiya in Karthik month as per all Hindu calendars.

Bhai Dooj festival marks the importance of divine relationship between brother and sister. On this day, Lord Yama visited his sister Yami’s house and had meal. As per the wish of his sister he gave boon to brothers those who visit their sister’s house and have meal will be free from his Yamapash (death) for long time. Hence it is also celebrated as Yama Dwitiya.

Bhai Dooj has various regional names such as Bhai Phonta in West Bengal, Bhai Tika in Nepal, Bhatru Dwitiya, etc..
