Ganesh Navratri (Ganesh Utsav) in 2016

Ganesh Navratri, Ganesh Utsav or Ganesh Chaturthi Navratri, is celebrated from Ganesh Chaturthi day which is considered as the birth day of Lord Ganesh. In 2016, Ganesh Navratri begins on September 5 and ends on September 15 with Anant Chaturthi or Anant Chaturdasi.

The 9-nights of Ganesh festival begins on fourth day in bright half of Bhadrapad month (Bhadrapad Shukla Chaturthi).

Ganesh Navratri or Ganesh Chaturthi festival is celebrated with lot of gusto and enthusiasm in Maharashtra, Gujarat, other North Indian states, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. Ganesh Mandap or pandals are erected on the streets for the festival and Ganesh idols are installed.

Worshipping the Lord for more than nine days, Ganesh idol is immersed in water on Anant Chaturthi day.

Ganesh Immersion (Ganesh nimajjan or visarjan) is the most celebrated event in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Nagpur (Maharashtra), Hyderabad and Secunderabad, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, and Warangal in Andhra Pradesh.

In some areas of Karnataka, Ganesha Hebba (Ganesh festival in Kannada) is celebrated for more than 15 days.
