Why buy gold or silver on Akshaya Tritiya? The importance of purchasing gold, Silver, other metals items and home appliances on Akshay Tritiya is mentioned in many Puranic legends and stories. All the legends stated that this is one of the very few auspicious days for buying gold and silver without any hesitations. More than buying the legend mentioned the joy of giving and donating.
The meaning of the term Akshaya means never diminishing and always be abundant. Some people believe Akshay Tritiya day is meant for giving donations for poor but not for buying. It is also true in one perspective.
On Akshaya Tritiya Kuchela, a friend of Lord Sri Krishna, visited the Lord after a long time and offered a recipe which was given to him by his wife. Kuchela is so poor that he couldn’t offer more than that to the Lord. In return, Sri Krishna offered him the abundant wealth and prosperity. This is one such incident that exemplifies the joy of giving and donating. Most of us sidetrack the whole incident but grasp the conclusion that getting gold and silver on this day brings us the abundant wealth.
There was a tradition in olden days that those who wanted to perform their children’s marriage in marriage season (Shravan Month – Magh Month) used to buy gold on Akshaya Tritiya and store it for the occasion. This has become huge in nowadays and people made it a tradition of buying gold on this day irrespective of anyone’s marriage or any functions.
Lakshmi Puja or Kubera Lakshmi Puja is an auspicious ritual to perform on Akshaya Tritiya day as is the day of appointment of Kubera as the Banker of the Heaven (Dhanadhipathi).
