Vasant Panchami, also spelt as Basant Panchami, or Saraswati Puja is a festival that represents the arrival of Vasant Ritu (Spring Season). In 2026, Vasant Panchami date is January 23.

On this day, Mata Saraswati is worshipped. It is celebrated on the fifth day of the month Magh (Magha masa Shukla Panchami). Vasanta Panchami is also called as ‘Shree Panchami’ or ‘Saraswati Panchami’.

Saraswati: Goddess of Learning:

Maa Saraswati is the Goddess to worship on the day of Vasant Panchami. Goddess Saraswati is the Goddess of learning, the divine symbol of Vedic knowledge and wisdom.

Vasant Panchami Celebrations in Basar: Shri Panchami in Basara Gnana Saraswati Temple

In Basar, Telangana, Gnana Sarasawati temple is located. According to Puranas, the temple and the main adobe was set and established by Veda Vyasa, who wrote MahaBharata. Here, the Sarasawati is worshipped with great fervor and Vasant Panchami is celebrated in a grand way. Saraswati Homam (Yagna) is performed by Veda pandits.

On this day, in Basar temple, ‘Aksharabhyasam or ‘vidya Praasana or ‘Vidhyarambham’ is done for children who are at the age of 3 – 5 years. After Vidya Praasana they are all set to go to school and pursue their education.

Koothanur Saraswathi Temple in Tamil Nadu, Sringeri Sharada Mata Temple and Kollur Mookambika Temple, Gadag Maha Saraswati Temple in Karnataka, Maihar Sharada Mata Temple in Madhya Pradesh, Srinagar Sharika Mata Temple in Kashmir, Panachikkadu Saraswathi Temple in Kerala, Kolanu Bharathi Temple in Kurnool of Andhra Pradesh are other popular places to visit during Vasant Panchami.

Significance

  • The festival honors Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, wisdom, music, and arts, and is considered her birth anniversary (Saraswati Jayanti).​

  • It marks the beginning of the spring season, symbolizing new beginnings and fresh energy for learning and creativity.​

  • It is considered an auspicious day for initiating children’s education, called Akshar-Abhyasam or Vidya-Arambham, where writing and learning begin with blessings to the goddess.​

  • Traditionally, devotees wear yellow clothes and decorate with yellow flowers, reflecting the vibrancy and warmth of spring.​

Rituals and Customs

  • Worship includes offering prayers, flowers, yellow sweets, and fruits to Goddess Saraswati.​

  • Cultural programs, music, dance, and kite flying are common activities during this festival, expressing joy for the new season.​

  • The day is also celebrated in educational institutions where students and teachers honor Saraswati for wisdom and learning.​
