Early Life and Spiritual Journey
Tukdoji Maharaj received spiritual initiation from his guru, Aadkoji Maharaj. From a young age, he engaged in rigorous spiritual practices and became known for his oratory skills and musical talents. He composed over 3,000 bhajans (devotional songs) in Hindi and Marathi, which played a vital role in inspiring people during the freedom struggle
Contributions to Social Reform
Tukdoji Maharaj’s work focused on rural development and social reform. He believed that the development of villages was essential for national progress. His notable initiatives included:
- Gramgeeta: A significant literary work advocating for village development.
- Establishment of the All India Shri Gurudev Seva Mandal: This organization aimed at integrated rural development.
- Participation in the Quit India Movement: He was arrested during this movement but continued to inspire others through his bhajans, which became rallying cries for the freedom struggle
Advocacy for Unity and Equality
He was a strong advocate for social equality, working against caste discrimination and superstition. His teachings emphasized communal harmony and the importance of education for all, particularly women. He established the Gurukunj Ashram in 1935 as a center for spiritual learning and social upliftment.
Legacy and Honors
Tukdoji Maharaj passed away on October 11, 1968. His legacy continues to influence many aspects of Indian society:
- In 2005, Nagpur University was renamed Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University in his honor.
- The Indian postal department issued a commemorative stamp in his memory in 1993.
