Triveni Amavasya 2026 | Tribeni Amabasya

Triveni Amavasya (Tribeni Amabasya) is one of the auspicious days in Odisha as per Odia calendar. In 2026, Triveni Amavasya date is January 18.

It is observed on Magh Amavasya as per Odia Panjika (New Moon day in Magha Month).

Triveni Amavasya is observed with utmost gusto in Puri Jagannath Temple and Jajpur Biraja Devi Shaktipeeth Temple.

‘Maa Biraja Devi Janmotsava’ (Viraja Devi Jayanti) also falls on this day. Only on this day, Goddess Biraja is worshipped with ‘Gayatri Mantra’. Except this day, throughout the year, the Goddess is worshipped with Bana Durga Mantra.

Triveni Amavasya is a special Amavasya (new moon) mainly celebrated in connection with Maa Biraja at Jajpur in Odisha and the Triveni Sangam concept.

Meaning and context

  • The word Triveni refers to the confluence of three holy rivers, classically symbolized by Ganga, Yamuna, and the invisible Saraswati at Prayagraj.

  • In Odisha usage, Triveni Amavasya is linked with a sacred conjunction of tithi and nakshatra and is specially associated with the Biraja Kshetra at Jajpur.

Association with Maa Biraja

  • Triveni Amavasya is regarded as the “birthday” (jayanti) of Goddess Biraja at Jajpur, one of the important Shakti Peethas in eastern India.

  • On this day, large numbers of devotees visit the Biraja Temple, perform snana, darshan, and special worship to seek removal of sins and misfortunes.

Rituals and observances

  • Devotees traditionally take a holy bath (snana), perform tarpan and worship Goddess Biraja with deepa, dhupa and naivedya, praying for punya, kshama of papa, and general welfare.

  • Many also consider it highly auspicious for vrata, dana, and remembering ancestors, similar to other Amavasya tithis but with added merit due to the Triveni conjunction.

Triveni Amavasya in the calendar

  • Triveni Amavasya usually falls in the Magha month Amavasya around the Mauni Amavasya period, with the exact civil date varying year to year as per the lunar calendar.

  • Regional panchangs, especially from Odisha and major Hindu calendar sites, give the specific date and local timings for each year’s Triveni Amavasya.
