Thai Poosam, 7 February 2012

Today, 7 February 2012 is Thai Poosam (Thaipusam). It is one of the major festivals dedicated to Lord Murugan. It falls on Pusam Nakshatra day in Thai Masam as per Tamil calendar. It is celebrated with utmost fervor in Aarupadai Veedu (six prominent temples of Murugan) of Tamil Nadu. Batu Caves of Malaysia and Singapore are international attractions for Thaipusam festival celebrations.

The list of Aarupadai Veedu temples of Tamil Nadu: Subramanya Swamy Temples in Thirupparakundram, Thiruchendur, Palani, Swamimalai, Thiruthani and Pazhamudhircholai. In Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi temple, Maha Deepotsavam is celebrated on Thaipoosam.

Thaipoosam is also celebrated in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala.

Skandagiri Subramanya swamy Temple in Hyderabad and Srikalahasti Temple (Andhra Pradesh, Ghati Subramanya Temple and Kukke Subramanya Swamy Temple (Karnataka) are several other temples outside Tamil Nadu where Thaipusam is celebrated with equal fervor as in Tamil Nadu.
