Sughada | Maid of Gandhari

Sughada was the maid of Gandhari and she was the mother of Yuyutsu. Once the blind king Dhritrashtra, had an affair with her, and due to that, Sughada had given birth to Yuyutsu, and after some time, Gandhari gave birth to the 100 Kauravas. The father of Sughada served as a soldier in the Hastinapur Kingdom, and hence she was appointed as a maid to Gandhari during her pregnancy period.

Sughada was described as a noble woman, and she had united with Dhritrashtra, in order to produce the noble son Yuyutsu. Yuyutsu though was the son of Dhristrashtra, but he lived according to the path of dharma, and he maintained friendly relationship with the Pandavas. During the Kurukshetra war, he also fought on the side of the Pandavas. He was also a great devotee of Lord Krishna, and he was very much liked by Lord Krishna. During the exile term of the Pandavas, he had spoken to his half-brother Duryodana, and requested him to bring back the Pandavas to Hastinapur. He also questioned Duchadana, when he moved badly with Ma Draupati.

Sughada brought up Yuyutsu in a proper manner, and trained him in all kinds of arts. She looked after Gandhari and Dhritrashtra sincerely, and she served as a faithful servant to them. After she delivered Yuyutsu, both of them were allocated a small palace, in order to live there peacefully. Whenever Krishna visits Hastinapur Kingdom, he used to converse with Ma Sughada and Yuyutsu, and bless them.

Yuyutsu is considered as a second Vidura with regard to his good nature. Ma Sughada in her previous birth served as a maid to Ma Indrani. Once she didn’t give proper respect to Indrani. Due to that she was cursed by Indrani to be born as a maid. After her death, she had got relieved from her curse, and went to the kingdom of Indra, and it is believed that she still serves Ma Indrani in a pleasing manner.
