The Indian Railways is gearing up to ply special trains between key junctions via Visakhapatnam city to clear the Sankranti rush that is scheduled to begin from January 13.
Though the Bhubaneswar-based East Coast Railways (ECoR) and Secunderabad-based South Central Railways (SCR) have already started operating a couple of special trains from Christmas eve, both the railway zones are planning to augment the existing passenger services, particularly between Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam and Chennai, by covering almost all important locations such as Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Guntur, Nellore and Tirupati.
“At present, we are operating eight regular trains to Hyderabad, which is one of the most in demand destinations from the city. We hope to ply two more special trains exclusively between Vizag and Hyderabad from the first week of January to tackle the Sankranti rush as we expected passenger traffic to jump to over 100% during Pongal,” said DP Jena, manager, Visakhapatnam railway station. Currently, eight regular trains ply to Hyderabad from Vizag, of which Godavari, Garibrath and Duronto, are much in demand.
Meanwhile, a railway release stated that as per the recent announcements of a couple of special trains between various destinations via Visakhapatnam, train number 08401 Puri-Visakhapatnam-Ahmedabad Weekly special train, departing from Puri every Tuesday at 8.55am, will ply till January 28. In the return direction, train 08402 Ahmedabad-Visakhapatnam-Puri departing from Ahmedabad every Thursday at 6pm will ply till January 30.
The trains halt at Khurda Road, Balugaon, Chatrapur, Brahmapur, Ichhapuram, Sompeta, Palasa, Srikakulam Road, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Duvvada, Anakapalle, Samalkot, Rajamundry, Eluru, Vijayawada, Warangal, Sirpur Kagaznagar, Balharshah, Wardha, Badnera, Akola, Malkapur, Jalgoan, Amalner, Nandurbar, Surat and Vadodara stations in both the directions.
Similarly, 02845 Bhubaneswar-Yesvantpur Special, which leaves Bhubaneswar every Wednesday towards Yesvantpur, will run up to January 29. In the return direction, 02846 Yesvantpur-Bhubaneswar weekly express leaving Yesvantpur every Thursday will run up to January 30.
