Skandamata Havan | Navratri Homam for Santana Prapti, Family Harmony, Clarity in Life… Maa Skandamata Havan is performed on the fifth day (Panchami) of Navratri to invoke the motherly, protective aspect of the Divine Mother. Seated on a lion and holding infant Lord Skanda (Kartikeya / Murugan) in her lap, she embodies profound maternal love, intellectual illumination, and spiritual protection. Performing her fire ritual simultaneously bestows the grace of both Goddess Durga and Lord Kartikeya.

Core Purpose & Spiritual Significance

  • Vishuddha (Throat) Chakra Awakening: Maa Skandamata resides at the Vishuddha chakra. The homam dissolves communication blocks, clears speech defects, inspires eloquent articulation, and elevates pure creative expression.

  • Santana Prapti & Child Protection: Revered as the divine mother of the commander of the gods, her havan is widely performed for blessings of progeny, safe childbirth, and the health, intellect, and protection of children.

  • Pacification of Budha (Mercury): Astrologically associated with Mercury, this ritual alleviates Budha dosha, enhancing analytical acumen, commercial intelligence, logical reasoning, and academic prowess.

  • Dual Grace of Shakti & Skanda: Because she carries Kartikeya, the devotee receives not only the Goddess’s maternal affection and spiritual peace, but also the warrior-like courage, strategic intellect, and victory over adversaries granted by Lord Skanda.

Key Offerings (Dravyas) & Materials

  • Bananas (Kela): Her most favored fruit and offering; offered as naivedya and small portions into the sacred fire to invoke health, abundance, and progeny blessings.

  • Yellow Flowers & Garlands: Yellow marigolds, yellow kaner, or lotus flowers to honor her bright, serene form.

  • Cow Ghee & Honey: For general purification, cognitive clarity, and vitality.

  • Kheer (Rice Pudding) & Chana Dal: Sweetened rice cooked in milk, offered to symbolize nourishment, maternal grace, and planetary pacification of Mercury and Jupiter.

  • Guggulu & Camphor: For atmosphere purification and dispelling stagnant household energies.

Key Mantras for Ahutis

Each mantra is chanted with oblations of cow ghee and havan samagri into the sacred fire, concluding with “Svaha”:

  1. Dhyana Shloka:

    Simhasanagata Nityam Padmashritakaradvaya |

Shubhadastu Sada Devi Skandamata Yashasvini ||

  2. Moola Ahuti Mantra (Recommended for 108 cycles):

Om Devi Skandamatayai Namah Svaha ||

  3. Combined Navarna Ahuti:

Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Viche Skandamatayai Namah Svaha ||

  4. Progeny & Welfare Mantra (For Santana intent):

Sarvamangala Mangalye Shive Sarvartha Sadhike |

Sharanye Tryambake Gauri Narayani Namo’stu Te Svaha ||

Ritual Steps for the 5th Day Havan

  1. Aachaman & Sankalpa: Cleanse hands and mouth with holy water. Take akshata, water, and yellow flowers in the right palm and state your formal intent (e.g., child’s health and studies, conception blessings, clarity of speech, or career intellect).

  2. Preliminary Ahutis: Oblations to Lord Ganesha, Kartikeya (Om Skandaya Namah Svaha), the Navagrahas (with special focus on Budha), and the Kuladevata.

  3. Main Ahutis to Maa Skandamata: Offer 108 rounds of the havan mixture infused with pure cow ghee and yellow flower petals while meditating on the Vishuddha chakra.

  4. Special Fruit Offering: Offer consecrated pieces of ripe yellow bananas into the flames with reverent prayers for family harmony and maternal grace.

  5. Aarti & Bhasma Dharana: Perform the concluding aarti of Maa Skandamata, apply the sacred ash (bhasma) to your throat and forehead, and distribute the banana and kheer prasad.

The primary purpose of Maa Skandamata Havan is to receive the dual blessings of supreme maternal grace, progeny welfare, and enhanced intellect. Holding infant Lord Skanda (Kartikeya / Murugan)—the divine commander-in-chief of the celestial armies—on her lap, Maa Skandamata represents fierce protective instincts combined with nourishing love, wisdom, and strategic power.

Core Purposes & Spiritual Benefits

  • Santana Prapti & Protection of Children: She is the primary deity invoked for overcoming hurdles in conceiving children, ensuring a safe pregnancy, and safeguarding young children against illnesses, negative energies, and mental stagnation.

  • Vishuddha (Throat) Chakra Awakening: Seated energetically at the Vishuddha chakra, her sacred fire offerings dissolve speech impediments, fears of public speaking, and hesitation, granting eloquence, vocal clarity, and pure creative expression.

  • Pacification of Mercury (Budha Dosha): Astrologically associated with the planet Mercury, this homam mitigates communication breakdowns, nervous system imbalances, and business-related misunderstandings while enhancing commercial sharpness, analytical acumen, and mathematical ability.

  • Unified Grace of Durga & Kartikeya: Because the ritual simultaneously honors both the Mother and Lord Skanda, the seeker receives maternal nourishment alongside Kartikeya’s courage, tactical intellect, and victory over fierce competition.

  • Liberation from Inner Turmoil (Maternal Solace): Just as an infant feels complete security in a mother’s embrace, devotees offering oblations to her experience deep psychological comfort, relief from emotional loneliness, and mental clarity.

Primary Specific Intentions (Kamya Goals)

  • Progeny Blessings: Removing karmic and planetary delays surrounding parenthood.

  • Academic & Scholastic Excellence: Assisting students in mastering complex subjects, sharpening memory retention, and excelling in competitive exams.

  • Business & Trade Growth: Gaining the sharp communication and negotiation skills vital for trade, marketing, and media professions.
