Simha Sankramana is the first day of Simha Maasa as per Solar calendar. Month of Simha Masa is celebrated as a Holy month in this temple. Flower pooja is a special pooja in this month. Kateel Durga Parameshwari Temple is a sacred pilgrimage site located in Kateel, Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka (approximately 29 km from Mangalore). Dedicated to Goddess Durga Parameshwari, it is situated on an islet formed in the middle of the Nandini River.

Etymology: The name Kateel is derived from Kati (center or waist) and Ile (earth/place), referring to its position in the middle of the river.

Slaying of Arunasura: According to legend, the demon Arunasura held a divine boon protecting him from being killed by any two- or four-legged creature, human, or weapon. Goddess Durga assumed the form of a giant bee (Bhramari) to defeat him. A rock near the entrance of the temple marks the spot associated with this legend.

Self-Manifested Deity: The main sanctum features an Udbhavalinga (self-manifested linga) depicting Goddess Durga.
