Rakkayi Amman Temple is situated on the top of the famous Alagar Temple in Madurai. In this temple, Ma Rakkayi is worshipped as the main deity, and the sacred Teertha located here is believed to have been the holy Ganga water itself, and it is called as Noopura Ganga. The holy temple tree is sandalwood tree, which would smell similar to the perfumes found in the divine worlds, and it adds more beauty to the temple.
As per ancient legend, when Lord Vamana had revealed his true form, his holy feet reached the abode of Lord Brahma. When Lord Brahma poured the holy Ganges waterinto the feet of the Lord from his holy pot, some water had sprayed in the earth, at the present place of this temple. Hence the water contained in the temple tank is called as Noopura Ganga. It is believed that those who take bath in the holy river would get relieved from skin related diseases. Devotees can also apply the holy Abhishekham oil on their body, in order to get relieved from their various diseases.
Once, Sage Sudhapa, while bathing in the holy Noopura Ganga didn’t noticed the presence of Rishi Durvasa at that place. Due to that Rishi Durvasa, become very angry with him and cursed Sudhapa to become a frog.The depressed Sage Sudhapa, performed penance in the form of a frog in river Vaigai and after a long time, he got the darshan of Ma Rakkayi and his brother Lord Vishnu, and due to their blessings, he has attained salvation.
This temple opens at 7.00 am and closes at 7.30 pm.
